It was 50 years ago in 1962 that the United States and Russia seemed to be on the brink of World War III. In October 1962 President John F. Kennedy and Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev engaged in the ultimate “throw down” challenge. The possibility that one side may declare war on the other almost became a reality during the Cuban Missile Crisis, and many people on both sides lived in fear of a nuclear attack. Bomb shelters and air raid drills were part of the American way of life.
