The Governor Isn't Home!
Like many big, old houses, some of the country's grand governor mansions are out of date and expensive to maintain. With today's tight finances, some states are looking for ways to cut costs on the homes. Some people have even suggested selling the estates. South Carolina rents out part of their governor's estate for weddings and special events. For various reasons, Ohio, Michigan, Idaho and New Jersey's official governor homes are all empty. As of yet, none of the states have resorted to the Depression days when Oklahoma's chief-of-state “Alfalfa Bill” Murray invited hungry Sooners to plant potatoes on the lawn.
