Our 2011 selection of the Top 10 Coolest Beach Homes will take you on a tour from Florida to New York to California and the Big Island in Hawaii. Notable this year is the great selection of fascinating beach homes in the Hamptons and Florida, both stealing a touch of California‘s thunder - the state that usually dominates our yearly list of the best homes on the ocean.

When talking about East Coast or Atlantic beach homes, especially in comparison to their West Coast counterparts in more temperate locations such as Laguna Beach, San Diego and Malibu, one could falsely conclude that these Eastern U.S. locations don't hold a candle to the West. Especially considering one of the California homes contains a state-of-the-art garage showcasing a commercial-grade hydraulic lift with subterranean parking and a 'secret' tunnel entry.

We'd be amiss not to recognize that the majority of spectacular beach homes in our previous lists have skewed towards the Pacific, this year, the tides have changed, with the Atlantic boasting six of the 10 beach homes for sale. Notably, three of these beach compounds are located in the northern East Coast.

Though we do think it is worthy of note that no matter which coast one chooses, Hawaii always seems to be at or near the pinnacle of any beach homes list. It's really hard to top homes on an island as beautiful as Hawaii. Especially one which sits on a cliff offering two outside covered sleeping areas, Indonesian Temple-style entries, native Hawaiian art, coy pond and a pool with spa looking out over the Pacific.

A Hawaii home took the top spot in the 2010 list, but with all the competition this year it has slipped down the list, although not because of any lack of luxury and comforts one would expect in a multi-million dollar home on the shores of the Big Island.

Climate is definitely important, however architecture is the real crown jewel when judging the 'coolness' factor. The New York area homes have quite a few masterpieces such as a Southampton award winner where all six bedrooms enjoy ocean views, an all-glass contemporary in Westhampton with rooftop deck, and a stunning work of art overlooking a 75-foot bluff above the famed Montauk shoreline.

As to be expected, Florida is very well represented rounding out the six homes from the East including taking the top spot with a super-cool and bold color-coded cube home located in the very private and gated Sanderling Club on Siesta Key. After working up a sweat on the private volleyball court one can take a dip in the pool that is large enough for a water polo match. For the inner child the pool also features a water slide, just for the fun of it.

No matter what one's personal preference is for a beach home, all of these homes are astonishing and best of all, they are all for sale.
