Beaver Creek is one of the newest upscale ski areas in the United States with a definite European influence modeled after famous resorts like Cortina in Italy and St. Moritz in Switzerland. It was opened in 1980 by a ski company out of Vail, which is about 15 minutes down I-70 from Beaver Creek. The city was originally envisioned as a site for ski competitions at the 1976 Winter Olympics.
