Additional Features/Descriptions:
Beaver Creek is one of the newest upscale ski areas in the United States with a definite European influence modeled after famous resorts like Cortina in Italy and St. Moritz in Switzerland. It was opened in 1980 by a ski company out of Vail, which is about 15 minutes down I-70 from Beaver Creek. The proximity of the two towns create perhaps the best ski-fun opportunities in the United States. The Beaver Creek Resort includes three villages - Beaver Creek, Bachelor Gulch, and Arrowhead. The city was originally envisioned as a site for ski competitions at the 1976 Winter Olympics. Although that idea fell through when nearby Denver dropped out as a candidate to be the host city, Beaver Creek has hosted a number of World Cup ski races including the 1989 World Ski Championships and the 2009 Audi FIS Alpine World Cup. President Gerald Ford and Betty Ford owned a ski home (now for sale at $13 million) in Beaver Creek. The city has been the host of the annual American Enterprise Institute World Forum where major world leaders have met since 1982 to discuss international political and economic issues. The city is also the co-site with Vail for the annual Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival. The New York Philharmonic, Dallas Symphony Orchestra and Yo-Yo Ma will perform there in 2010. SKI Magazine called Beaver Creek "the consummate kid-friendly resort". Beaver Creek has 1805 skiable acres, 17 lifts, and 148 ski runs.
