Additional Features/Descriptions:
Jackson Hole Valley was originally the home for Native American Blackfeet and Shoshone tribes but in the early 1800s the fashion rage for beaver skinned hats brought trappers from all over to the prolific streams and rivers of the lush Jackson Hole valley. How did Jackson Hole get it’s unusual name? A “hole” is a trapper term for a valley. Because Davey Jackson was the first trapper to call this area his own, it was commonly referred to as “Jackson’s Hole”. In recent years it has been shortened to just Jackson Hole. The entire valley is considered Jackson Hole, the actual town is called Jackson. Another “Jackson” (William Henry) was also a major figure in the area's development. Originally a member of the Lewis & Clark team, he was commissioned to break from the expedition and travel south into the Yellowstone and Grand Teton area to document the majesty of this pristine environment via photographs of Yellowstone and the Teton Mountains. His photographs, along with those of Thomas Moran and others, were sent back to Washington to confirm the skeptical written reports of geysers, hot pots and natural wonders. These photos played a substantial role and contributed to the eventual creation of the Yellowstone area as the world’s first national park in 1872. With the government incentive of 160 free acres, the first homesteaders showed up in Jackson Hole in the 1880s and the area began to develop as an agricultural and cattle center. Because of the magnificent rugged natural beauty, dude ranches began to spring up in the early 1900s attracting wealthy dudes and dudettes from the East. Offering a genuine taste of western life, visitors enjoyed horseback riding, campfire sing-a-longs, hiking, wild rodeos, rafting in the many rivers, unparallel fishing and both cross country and downhill skiing, Today the Jackson Hole visitor still enjoys all these activities—most of them year round! Each winter season Jackson Hole attracts millions of visitors for both its spectacular national parks and world-famous skiing. The town has also become well known for its culture and nightlife. It has been the host of the Jackson Hole Writers Conference for seventeen years and is the site of the National Museum of Wildlife Art, the Grand Teton Music Festival and the Center for the Arts. Many celebrities live in and visit Jackson including Harrison Ford and Sandra Bullock. Jackson Hole offers two premier ski resorts with miles of trails for both novice and extreme world class enthusiast. Adding to the fun are the Grand Teton National Park, Yellowstone National Park and the National Elk Refuge. The premier ski areas include about 8,000 acres of lift service and one of the highest vertical drops in North America at 4139 feet. Jackson Hole gets an average of 500 inches of snow annually and has gained the reputation as one of the most desirable destinations in the world.
